CHARACTER NAME: Raina
CHARACTER AGE: 30
SERIES: Marvel's Agents of Shield
CHRONOLOGY: Episode 2 x 11 (Aftershocks) -- right as she walks out into traffic and Gordon swept her away.
CLASS: Villain
HOUSING: Sure! House her with roommies.
BACKGROUND: In the year 2015, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there are many parallels to the modern world we live in today. For one, most of the technology is the same for the average person. People drive the same style vehicles, use the same style electronics, live the same kind of ordinary lives, etc. We run on the same calendar year, and the same countries, geography, and military organizations exist.
However, the first major difference of this world is the fact that technology goes way beyond what the average person uses. Special factions like SHIELD and the opposing force HYDRA (as well as several other independent and highly intelligent groups) have far advanced weaponry, vehicles, and technology. The computer system alone will bring up a 3-D hologram and can be used to create models that are to scale or shrunk down in size. Parts can even be zoomed in or out on with a simple wave of a hand.
Some of SHIELD's and HYDRA's weapons house both firearm power and computer technology; the icer comes to mind with its ability to shoot out something that looks like a disk that will attach to a host and 'short circuit' them to knock them out for the time being. Even more frightening, though, is the fact that some of the weaponry these factions use is alien -- harnessing powers far beyond what human understanding and capability.
Vehicles can fly when they look like they should only be able to drive, there are highly advanced cloaking devices on some of them, and many of the ones in use by SHIELD and HYDRA are equipped with advanced weaponry. Not exactly things you'll find at a regular ol' car dealership.
Apart from the technology, though, the biggest and most significant difference about this world and ours, is the fact that they have cool superheroes with a wide array of abilities. Some of these abilities are technology based (i.e. Iron Man), some of these abilities are the results of experiments gone wrong, or right? (Captain America, The Hulk). And some of these abilities are based on different DNA -- alien blood (Thor would TECHNICALLY be considered an alien, even though some view him as a God).
It's in that last category that Raina falls. Raina was born into a family that, for generations had their DNA altered by an alien race called the Kree. The men and women of this family were entirely human, but they just had the potential to become something more if the right catalyst was set off (more on that later). Raina heard all sorts of exaggerated stories from her grandmother that she was special, that she would become an angel. It wasn't until she met up with a man, Dr. Calvin Zabo, during her youth that some light was shed on these stories. It's inferred that Raina was a beggar on the streets of Thailand at the time and when she shared with Calvin the stories her grandmother told her, he promised to make them a reality.
We don't know what happened between this time and the present, but when we're first introduced to Raina in the series, she was working for the Centipede Project, a group of scientists who worked in the shadows -- backed in secret by HYDRA. The main goal of this group was to implant subjects with a device filled with a serum that would give users superhuman strength or greatly enhance already existing abilities. (Similar to the supersoldier serum given to Captain America). The side-effect to the centipede serum, however, was spontaneous combustion due to an instability in the chemical makeup. Raina's main role for this group was working as a recruiter.
As with most bad guy groups, the good guys (SHIELD) sniffed them out and Raina became a person of interest. While she worked to stabilize the centipede serum, we came to learn that she was working with a man referred to simply as the 'clairvoyant.' This man was believed to be able to see and predict all things past, present and future. Raina was particularly interested in him because she hoped he could answer the questions and stories her grandmother always told her and shine some light on what she would become. Eventually, however, Raina was detained by SHIELD and held in a special prison cell until the whole civil war between SHIELD and HYDRA broke out.
At this point, it was discovered that Grant Ward (a former SHIELD agent who was working under Phil Coulson) was actually a HYDRA operative whose loyalties lie with a man named John Garrett (who had been posing as a SHIELD agent as well). And as it turned out, John Garrett was the infamous clairvoyant, who was actually not a clairvoyant at all. After he ordered Ward to break Raina out of prison, she was disappointed to find out the man she once greatly admired was nothing but a fraud. But Garrett quickly won her back by offering her the opportunity to move the Centipede Project into Phase 3.
Before I go any further, let me take a moment to talk about a certain drug that plays an important role in the Agents of SHIELD storyline. This drug is called GH 325. Said drug is derived from alien DNA and has the ability to completely revive someone from death/near death. But although the drug has a remarkable success rate in reviving most of its subjects, it also comes with some extreme side-effects. Most of the users find themselves going crazy, obsessively drawing circles and lines in a pattern they don't understand but feel compelled to write. Phil Coulson, the director of SHIELD was brought back to life using this drug as was Skye (a young orphan with highly skilled hacking abilities whose searches for her parents and other information about herself led her to SHIELD). The difference between them, however, is that while Coulson started to exhibit the compulsive need to draw those symbols -- Skye did not.
So yes -- GH 325. This was the drug Garrett wanted Raina to recreate. She and her team were able to succeed, but could only make one single vial. Garrett, afraid to die, took it for himself and housed an unlimited power -- claiming he could see the universe. The prospect excited Raina, but in the end Garrett, although enhanced, was defeated and killed by SHIELD. And Raina, after getting a hold of information about Skye's DNA, came to realize that Skye was the long lost daughter of Calvin Zabo. At the end of the first season, she reunited with the man, gave him a picture and told him she knew where his daughter was.
So fast forwarding to season 2, Raina was obsessed with this thing called the Obelisk. At first glance it seemed like a very volatile piece of alien technology that would kill anyone who touched it by turning them into stone. But what it turned out to be was a key -- a device that, when triggered by the right people (people with the potential to become more than simple humans due to having alien DNA dormant in their systems), it would bring about a transformation. Considering Raina spent her entire life wondering what she would become -- and considering she was able to actually touch the Obelisk without turning to stone, her motivations were clear. She wanted to get the Obelisk where it needed to go to activate her personal transformation.
During this same time, SHIELD (and more specifically Agent Coulson) finally uncovered the mystery of the GH 325 drug and why its users were obsessed with drawing those circles. It turned out to be a blueprint for a long-forgotten alien city. And once Coulson finally came to this realization, his compulsion to draw the map immediately stopped, satisfied that he finally had an answer as to what it was. And this led SHIELD to finding gateways into this forgotten city in order to seal it off so that HYDRA wouldn't be able to use it to their own power-hungry means.
Unfortunately, Raina had her own agenda. She managed to use HYDRA to not only get Skye but also lure her down into the city. She stole the Obelisk and brought it to a special chamber deep in the ruins of the alien city -- causing a catalyst of reactions to occur. The chamber sealed both her and Skye inside as the Obelisk opened and became something akin to a cluster of crystals. Then, with a bright flash of light, it encased both Raina and Skye in stone which acted like a cocoon -- causing their alien DNA to awaken and transform.
Skye emerged from the chrysalis -- looking unchanged but harboring new and strange abilities, the ground quaking beneath her. Raina, however, didn't come through looking nearly as glorious as she had hoped. She was covered in thorns and had been transformed into something almost inhuman -- a monster. Gone was her previous beauty, and born was this creature who was the complete opposite of what she wished to become.
She managed to escape the catacomb and went to find Skye's father. She demanded he help her and claimed she couldn't live her life like this -- her insides felt like gravel and it hurt every time she moved. She harbored a misdirected rage at Skye, claiming that Skye got the gift that was meant for her. Calvin reacted with rage, and then coldly told Raina he helped her get everything she wanted and they were done. He said if she couldn't live her life the way she was now....then to stop living it.
Raina, devastated, listened to his advice and later on found a busy street where she proceeded to walk into traffic. SHIELD operatives who had been on the lookout for her stopped and surrounded her. And when she told them she would fight, all of a sudden, a bright light engulfed her and a man with no eyes appeared, sweeping her up and taking her off into the unknown.
PERSONALITY: Raina suffers from special snowflake syndrome. Up until her transformation, she believed that one day she would become this beautiful, ascended creature and I believe that was something that fueled her narcissism. Because that's what she is -- narcissistic. Raina puts a lot of stock in her beauty, knowing she's attractive and constantly using it to her advantage. She flirts to get what she wants, and she oozes sex appeal even to those who resist her charms. It's how she interacts with her environment. And once she loses her human beauty and goes through her transformation, Raina becomes devastated. She sees herself as hideous and that is what blinds her, depresses her, and even leads her to attempt suicide.
But for the most part, Raina appears to be confident. Whether it's because she believes she's above most of the general human population or because she has faith in her own abilities to get what she wants, it's uncertain. But she often seems certain of an outcome in a situation, and although it's possible for her to be surprised or even afraid -- she handles herself well for lacking in the physical defense department. At one point during the series, she is incarcerated by SHIELD. As soon as the civil war between HYDRA and SHIELD comes to fruition, Raina is sitting in her cell making paper flowers out of what looks like scrap garbage. Once she hears the fighting nearing her, she smirks and waits -- knowing that she now has her ticket out of the cell even without knowing that they were coming specifically for her.
Speaking about physical abilities, Raina relies mostly on technology, her intelligence and her persuasiveness to win most of her battles. She's sneaky and cunning. At one point during the series, she finds out that Coulson is using one of his agents to spy on HYDRA operations. Raina snaps a photo and threatens to out his spy so that she can get what she wants -- Skye to come with her and meet Calvin. Earlier in the series, she also persuades Coulson to be hooked up to a machine that will take a person through their memories in order to help him recall his forgotten ones about being brought back to life -- leaching on his curiosity in order to get him to consent. As a recruiter for Centipede, Raina would often charm their test subjects into willingly accepting the experiments. But even so, she has no qualms about doing these things without consent. It's also hinted that Raina is very good with chemistry. She is the one who leads the team to recreate the single injection GH 325 and she's also able to recognize Skye's DNA samples and readings, immediately putting it into context that Skye is Calvin's daughter.
Raina has an appreciation for all things pretty. She very much appreciates beauty -- not just her own. She loves flowers and constantly wears floral print dresses. She also has an appreciation for all things special. Raina becomes a part of the Centipede project simply so that she can observe people and what they will become under the right circumstances. She has a special affinity toward people with gifts as evidenced by her infatuation with Garrett when she believes him to be Clairvoyant. And Raina is very easily taken in by people who promise to show her what she would truly become -- such as Calvin. She finds Skye fascinating as well because not only is Skye Calvin's daughter, but they can relate on some weird, molecular level.
Probably the most important part about Raina's personality is that she has no real moral compass. She doesn't care about people in general. Even though she finds some fascinating, in the end -- she has no real attachments to anyone save for Calvin. To her, they are creatures to be experimented on and toyed with just to see how they'll react. Raina can be the warmest person in the world to a person she meets, but she will always be cold on the inside. The most beautiful of flowers are often covered in thorns, after all.
POWER: Raina will have three abilities. The first power will be the ability to manipulate the growth of flowers. She can either grow them right out of the palm of her hand or cause them to grow out of soil. She can also revive a dying flower or on the same coin, kill a flower with a simple touch of her hand.
The second ability will be a pheromone aura. Like a plant giving off a scent to lure insects, Raina can give off an undetectable scent to lure men and women's sexual desire. She can turn this on and off at will, but it has to be consciously activated by her in order to have any affect.
The final power is the ability to transform between her human form and inhuman form at will. When in her inhuman form, Raina becomes a creature covered from head to toe in thorns. Her eyes are gold and her teeth are sharper. She appears to have enhanced reflexes and strength while in this form -- able to jump higher or hit someone a fair distance. The thorns are strong and impossible to break without very extreme force, and although they're very sharp and will make it difficult for her to be grabbed -- they are not poisonous. Being pricked by them will only cause pain.

Hello, fellow imPorts.
My name is Raina. It seems as though this is a chaotic time for most -- people worrying about what happened to their loved ones or homes or even what will happen to them now that they're here. But if you stop to think about it, there's a certain beauty to this world you never would have been able to experience otherwise. You have become a hero. You're simultaneously admired and feared because of your newfound abilities.
You've risen above what your life once was. You've transcended. You came here and now have the chance to meet several others from different worlds -- different in their own unique ways but united under the same singular goal. And I, for one, can appreciate just how many new and exciting faces I'm about to meet. I hope we can learn a great deal from one another.
[ She leans forward, her smile -- although still beautiful -- turns a bit predatory as she continues on. ] But out of curiosity, if you've given it thought, what will be the first thing you do as an alleged hero? I would very much appreciate hearing all your answers. Thank you.

Additional powers update
As part of her inhuman form, Raina has canonically developed precognition powers. When I apped her, this wasn't known just yet, but I recently got mod approval to have her start to develop it here as part of her inhuman form.
This ability has been shown to manifest itself in vague dreams. Raina is initially plagued by vivid nightmares showing glimpses of future events. She doesn't realize this is what's happening, however, until one of her dreams comes true (Skye sitting at dinner with her father, there's a bouquet of daisies and they're all so happy.) What she sees is brief -- hints and flashes that don't offer much context or explanation. But over time, I believe her ability will get much stronger.
In the most recent episode, Raina had a premonition when she wasn't dreaming. Gearing up for the Avengers movie, Raina gets a glimpse at the complete and utter destruction that is about to be unleashed on the world. I think that these types of premonitions are rare and only grip her when something completely and utterly devastating is about to happen. In game, it will take a while for her to get to this point.
I believe that Raina's power is constantly growing stronger and stronger, but it will be a slow build. For the first few months, it will be limited to vivid dreams that she doesn't understand. She won't even realize she has the ability to see the future until something she sees becomes true. But without the inhumans to guide and train her, she won't really be able to get a hold of her power and it will often activate completely out of her control and at random.
I'm more than open to any plots surrounding this so feel free to contact me either here or on plurk (
power update numero dos
Now as for her enhanced Flower Manipulation, I want to expand this to full plant control. At the moment, she is able to grow/destroy any flower with the palm of her hand. But with this enhancement, she wouldn't be limited to flowering plants. She could grow anything. By simply laying her hands on the ground, she could cause vines to spring up and entangle her enemies. She will also be able to talk to plants and get them to aid her (trees to bend their limbs and hit someone or dandelions to spread their fuzzy seeds as a distraction technique, etcetc). She could lay her hands on a dying tree and revive it or with a simple touch of her hand, wipe out an entire crop field. The limits of this power is that each of these plants she taps into uses her as a life force. So she wouldn't be able to control too many at once, otherwise she would risk seriously weakening herself or even dying. But at the same time, if she kills plants, she can convert their energy into her own as a means of power enhancement.
